APRIL 8, 2025 ; UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The Philippine Women’s National Football Team capped off their camp in the United Arab Emirates in stylish fashion, beating the hosts, 4-0, at the UAE Football Association Headquarters. Facing a more defensively resilient side from the one they faced four days ago, the Filipinas still found creative ways to unlock the opposition, especially in the second half.
Four different goal scorers found the back of the net for the visitors. Hali Long, Carleigh Frilles, and Chandler McDaniel all found the target after the break, with Sara Eggesvik’s opener
setting the stage in the first half. Unlike in the first encounter between the two teams, the goals did not come early and frequent. It took 37 minutes before the Philippines could break
the resistance through Eggesvik’s long range strike. Having breached the defense, the second half was a completely different story.
“They sat in a different formation so we had to be a little more patient on the ball. We got a little frustrated — me individually included — in the first half, but we just kept wearing them
down and kept the ball moving, and we definitely picked our moments of opportunity towards the end of the first half and definitely in the second half moving forward. Just perseverance
from the team, good service, and good finishes,” said Player of the Match, Katrina Guillou.
Nine minutes after emerging from the locker rooms, Frilles doubled the advantage with a well taken finish from close range. Long made it three with another emphatic header, her 20th international goal. Chandler then capped off her impressive international return with the team’s fourth, and her third of the window, 16 minutes before the final whistle.
“To score eight goals in the last two games is very good. Lots of different goal scorers as well which is good for us. But again it’s about building on the way we want to play and hopefully in
the highlights you’ll see the really good goals we scored. Really pleased with how the girls played in the last two games,” said Head Coach Mark Torcaso.
“We need to understand that we’re going to play in the Asian Cup Qualifiers, and we’re going to be playing teams like this that are defensively very good. So playing UAE now is extremely good because, we’re going to come up against Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia. They’re going to do the same thing in the Qualifiers, so we wanted to be prepared for that. We stayed disciplined, we stayed patient. The girls were very good in possession, and we scored some really good goals. It’s about building towards the Asian Cup qualifiers and we’re really looking forward to that.”
Sara Castañeda made her first appearance for the Philippines since 2022, coming on alongside Kaya Hawkinson in the second half for Frilles and Eggesvik. Paige McSwigan also earned her second appearance for the Filipinas when she replaced Serrano with 18 minutes to go. Alex Carpio and Camille Sahirul were the final substitutes, as they came on for Chandler McDaniel and Janae DeFazio close to the end.
The Filipinas will next come together for the May 26 to June 3 International Window, where they are expected to play two matches at home.
