APRIL 4, 2025 ; UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The Philippine Women’s National Football Team put in an impressive performance on Friday night, winning 4-1 in the first of two international friendlies against the United Arab Emirates.
Three different scorers found the back of the net to give the Filipinas a resounding victory at the UAE Football Association Headquarters. Captain Hali Long headed in the opener from a free kick to set the tone just eight minutes into the contest. 11 minutes later, Chandler McDaniel, returning from a prolonged spell away due to injury, marked her official comeback in emphatic fashion with an unstoppable rocket from way outside the box. Then two quick-fire goals, Meryll Serrano from close range at the half-
hour mark, and another from Chandler almost immediately after, gave the Filipinas a four-goal lead heading into half-time.
The second half saw a host of changes made by Head Coach Mark Torcaso, including the introduction of 21-year-old midfielder Paige McSwigan, who officially made her debut for the Philippines. The University of North Florida player came on alongside Kaya Hawkinson after the break, replacing Long and Carleigh Frilles. Shortly after the hour mark Nina Meollo, Bella
Pasion, and Alex Carpio came on for Olivia McDaniel, Jane DeFazio, and Serrano.
Kent State University defender Aliana Weibel, 19, also made her debut, coming on as a late substitute for Jessika Cowart.
“That we were able to implement the playing style was very important to us,” said Torcaso after the game. “This was our first official international match of the year, so it was important for us to score goals, but also to build the playing style.
All four of our goals were scored with
the way we want to play, so now it’s about building that into the next game, the next window, and then the Asian Cup Qualifiers.”
Despite the visitors dominating the opening half, it was the UAE that scored the second half’s solitary goal right before the final whistle to deny the Philippines a clean sheet.
“The second game will be harder because now they know how we play. But it’s important for us to have that challenge. It’s been a great game today, it’s been a great couple of days, and we’re looking forward to the second game and getting another good result,” added Torcaso.
The Filipinas will now have a three days to train and continue building on their style of play before facing the UAE again on April 8.
