In their first stint in an international tournament of the Albert Capellas era, the Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) drew 1-all against Myanmar to kick off their ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 campaign at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, Philippines.
Despite dominating possession in the first half of play, the Philippines were unable to make the most out of their opportunities. In that half, all 14 of their attempts at goal failed to find the back of the net. After a Bjørn Kristensen strike narrowly missed the inside of the left post at the 15’ mark – against the run of play – the Asian Lions grabbed the lead in the 25th minute with a breakthrough goal. A foul in the Philippine defensive third was capitalized on by Maung Maung Lwin, whose free kick sailed over the fingertips of goalkeeper Patrick Deyto and into the net for Myanmar to take the lead, 0-1. Most of the blue shirts’ chances were thwarted by the rock-solid Myanmar backline, highlighted by the reliable Zin Nyi Nyi Aung between the posts. Zin Nyi Nyi Aung made several crucial saves, including a safe catch on a long shot by Zico Bailey just outside the box in the 34th minute and a miraculous fingertip deflection in a one-on-one duel with Kristensen in the 45th minute.
Intent on turning around the disappointing start, the Philippine team made notable adjustments to open the second half. The home team’s attacking momentum was initially slowed down by the high defensive line of Myanmar, challenging the central midfield trio of Reyes, Bailey, and Kekkonen to unlock the packed central area. The PMNFT’s lapses on defense however, opened up a counterattack in the 63rd minute that allowed Ye Yint Aung to bury a lifted pass from Maung Maung Lwin. But fortunately for the Filipino team, the goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR review, keeping Myanmar from doubling their tally.
Six minutes later, the Philippines initiated a counterattack of their own. Sandro Reyes was successful in a challenge and directed a counterattack immediately with a well-timed forward pass from the midfield and over the opposing centerbacks to Kristensen. The latter was fouled in the box by Zin Nyi Nyi Aung, whose heroics had kept his side in the lead for over an hour. Kristensen was subsequently rewarded with a penalty, which he coolly converted to level the match 1-all at the 72’ mark.
The PMNFT maintained their aggressiveness throughout the rest of the match and fired more shots, none of which got past the Myanmar keeper. With 88 minutes elapsed, Myanmar came close to scoring after Maung Maung Lwin’s lob from the right side would have found the net, if not for a clutch one-handed catch by Deyto. Following 10 minutes of added time, neither side could break the deadlock, ending the match tied at 1-1.
